  • Sapphire is often thought of as being synonymous with the colour blue, but also come in many other colors, such as orange, purple, yellow, and pink. Sapphires in other colours are called fancy sapphires.

  • The most valuable fancy sapphire is an orange-pink or pinkish-orange variety called 'padparadscha' after the lotus blossom. 

  • Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September.

  • Sapphire is corundum, the exact same type of mineral as ruby.

  • Sapphires rate 9.0 on hardness scale, making them one of the best gemstones for use in jewellery.

  • When Lady Diana and Prince Charles became engaged in February 1981, Diana's engagement ring featured a 12-carat oval blue sapphire. At the time it cost 28,000 pounds sterling, but it is now valued at over $500,000. In 2010, Diana's son Prince William gave the ring to his longtime girlfriend Catherine Middleton.
